Yet, for most people, exposure to climate change is indirect occurring via media representations of ongoing environmental changes and impacts occurring around the world (Doherty, 2018 Doherty & Clayton, 2011). Previously, research has strongly focused on how direct exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as high temperatures, drought, and flooding affect mental health (Burke et al., 2018 Evans, 2019 Graham, White, Cotton, & McManus, 2019 Obradovich, Migliorini, Paulus, & Rahwan, 2018). These implications may arise from the physical, social and economic impacts of extreme and acute climatic changes or the psychological distress and anxiety evoked by awareness of the short- and long-term impacts of climate change (Cunsolo & Ellis, 2018 Fritze, Blashki, Burke, & Wiseman, 2008 Hayes, Blashki, Wiseman, Burke, & Reifels, 2018). Our findings suggest that climate-related psychological stressors are significantly linked with mental health in many countries and draw attention to the need for cross-disciplinary research aimed at achieving rigorous empirical assessments of the unique challenge posed to mental health by negative emotional responses to climate change.Ĭlimate change has important implications for mental health.
